3 Books That Have Deeply Impacted Me (and Why I Became a Life Coach)

Daily writing prompt
List three books that have had an impact on you. Why?

Books have always been more than just a source of knowledge for me they’ve been mirrors, guides, and companions through my own growth. These three in particular didn’t just change how I think; they shifted how I live, love, and lead.
These books didn’t just arrive at once or change me overnight—they’ve been companions along a long, winding journey. I’ve read countless self-help books, mindfulness books and others in this genre over the years, each offering something useful, but these three continue to echo in my mind when I need encouragement to stay true to myself. They’re not magic fixes, but they’ve given me a language and framework for understanding life with more clarity and compassion.

1. The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer

This book was my first deep dive into understanding the voice in my head—and more importantly, realizing I am not that voice. The concept of the “inner observer” gave me the language and space to step back from emotional storms, rather than being swept away by them. It offered a sense of peace I hadn’t realized was even possible. It showed me that freedom doesn’t come from controlling life, but from letting go of the illusion that I ever could.

2. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

Simple, but incredibly powerful. These four agreements—especially “Don’t take anything personally” and “Be impeccable with your word”—helped me rewrite the way I relate to others and to myself. It helped me release shame, stop making assumptions, and understand how much of our suffering is optional when we live with intention. These teachings continue to guide my daily interactions and have been key in setting compassionate but clear boundaries.

3. The Practice of Lojong: Cultivating Compassion through Training the Mind

This book invited me to bring heart into every corner of my mind. Lojong’s 59 slogans weren’t just philosophical—they were practical, raw, and real. They helped me embrace discomfort and cultivate compassion in moments where defensiveness would have been easier. It taught me that true strength often looks like softening, and that compassion isn’t a passive state; it’s an active, courageous choice.

And while they’ve helped me stay aligned with my truth, they may not be the books, or the path, for you. That’s the beautiful (and sometimes frustrating) thing about growth: it’s deeply personal. What awakens something in one person might fall flat for another.

That’s a big part of why I got into life coaching. Not to hand people a blueprint, but to walk alongside them as they discover their truth—whatever that looks like. My job isn’t to give you all the answers, but to create space for your questions, your values, and your version of peace to rise to the surface in whatever capacity. I encourage you, learn about you, and help you see where these truths are.

You don’t have to do it alone. But you do have to make it yours.
